BELOVED

James McAvoy is the most reluctant action hero of the summer in the uber-violent and ultra-dark thriller Wanted. McAvoy, who was nominated for an Oscar for his intense performance in Atonement, is the first to admit he's never played a role in which he shoots big guns and tackles breathtaking stunts.

Maybe that's why he is perfectly cast as an ordinary guy forced into a group of assassins by Angelina Jolie, who turns him into a tough-as-nails killer. McAvoy buffed up for the role, but the six-pack he's packing on the big screen is long since gone. In fact, he appears every bit the everyday guy — until he turns on the Scottish charm and flashes his killer smile.

You get treated roughly by Angelina Jolie in this movie, but at least you got to kiss her.

"Yes, we have a big old snog. It was memorable for its awkwardness. It was our first day, and it was like, 'Hey, how you doing? Are you all right? Yeah?' 'Action.' 'Oh, no. Here we go.' So yeah, those things are always awkward. I had just come from having my way with Keira Knightley in that sex scene in the library in Atonement, which took a lot more takes. You're usually more worried about the fact that your breath stinks from the lunch that you just had of garlic pasta, than whether you'll have a good time."

So what's Angelina really like?

"Working with her was cool. She's a nice lady, nothing like the image from all the hype that follows her around and all the stories you read. I'm an actor, so I should know better, but you still can't help but be influenced by the media about people that you've never met. Angelina was just completely different than anything I expected. I've got a lot of respect for her."

Were those muscles you display real?

"They were not a special effect. It was the result of a lot of time at the gym — which I hated. I was also trying to take these super protein supplements and they gave me incredible bouts of flatulence which wouldn't have endeared me to the rest of the cast. But I'm back to normal. I haven't worked out since the day, ten months ago, that I wrapped this film. Actually, I'd rather eat dog poo than exercise."

How did you like being in the middle of heavy gunplay and wild fight scenes?

"My stunt trainer was like a three-time World Kickboxing champion. That was exceptional — to be able to get trained by a champion in anything is cool, whether it's chess, checkers or kickboxing. Probably the hardest thing for me was not blinking when I was shooting a gun. I guess it's a common problem but it just doesn't look good on camera."

Your character is stuck in a 9-to-5 job where he's everybody's doormat. Ever been through that?

"I've had jobs in my past that I hated. I worked in a bakery for two years. There was someone else who was kind of lower than me, but I felt like I was the lowest of the low at times. I was getting cheated badly by my employers and I hated it."

Word is, you live a fairly ordinary lifestyle in London and drive a car with a lot of miles on it.

"I just enjoy my life. I don't see any reason to make it bigger or fancier or anything like that. I've never really been media fodder or had lots of fans and stuff. They kind of leave me alone. I'm very happy."
