TNT's 'Hawthorne' renewed for Season 2
TNT freshman medical drama "Hawthorne" has been renewed.
The cable network has ordered 10 additional episodes of the show, which stars and is executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, to air in 2010.
During its first season, "Hawthorne," which anchors TNT's Tuesday original-programming block at 9 p.m., is averaging 3.8 million viewers, a 69% improvement in the time slot.
" 'Hawthorne' has been a great addition to TNT's lineup of original series, and Jada Pinkett Smith's performance has been a tremendous draw with viewers," said Michael Wright, executive vp and head of programming at TNT, TBS and TCM.
Created by John Masius, "Hawthorne" stars Pinkett Smith as Christina Hawthorne, a compassionate and headstrong chief nursing officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital.
The Sony TV-produced series, whose first season wraps next week, co-stars Michael Vartan, Suleka Mathew, David Julian Hirsh, Christina Moore and Hannah Hodson.
Pinkett Smith, Masius, Glen Mazzara and Jamie Tarses are exec producing.
TNT's flagship drama, "The Closer," already has been picked up for another season. TNT is expected to make a decision on the remainder of its summer original series -- "Raising the Bar," "Saving Grace," "Leverage" and "Dark Blue" -- in September after they complete their runs.
Both shows about nurses that launched in the summer, "Hawthorne" and Showtime's "Nurse Jackie," have been renewed. NBC's similarly themed nurse drama "Mercy" is set to premiere in the fall.
